Individuals Exploring Their

Relationship with Substances

What is your relationship with substances?

Therapy offers a space to meet yourself where you are. You do not need to fit into anyone else’s idea of change, recovery, or readiness. Whether or not you identify with—or meet criteria for—a substance use disorder, we can work together to explore your relationship with substances with curiosity, honesty, and without judgment.

This work is not about labeling you or telling you what you should do. Instead, therapy focuses on helping you clarify what matters most to you, understand the role substances are playing in your life right now, and identify what kinds of changes feel possible and sustainable.

From there, we work toward defining what a healthier relationship with substances looks like for you. For some people, that means cutting back or finding more balance. For others, it involves learning ways to use more safely, reduce risks, and protect their health. And for some, it means choosing abstinence and building support for that decision. Harm reduction therapy centers your goals, your pace, and your definition of well-being.

A Personalized Approach

In individual therapy sessions, we work collaboratively to:

  • Explore your goals around substance use, whether moderation, abstinence, or something in between

  • Identify patterns in your substance use and how they connect to stress, relationships, emotions, or life transitions

  • Learn harm reduction strategies to reduce risk and increase safety

  • Build coping skills for anxiety, depression, and other challenges that often co-occur with substance use

  • Create space for self-compassion, reflection, and meaningful change

Therapy is tailored to your lived experience and does not require you to commit to a particular outcome in order to begin.

Harm Reduction Therapy in California and North Carolina

I provide individual harm reduction therapy to adults located in California and North Carolina. Sessions are offered virtually, allowing flexibility for work schedules, caregiving responsibilities, and privacy needs. I also have limited in-person sessions in the Bay Area.

Why Harm Reduction?

Traditional substance use treatment often defines success solely as abstinence. Harm reduction therapy recognizes that people have different histories, needs, and relationships with substances. It respects autonomy and centers your voice in shaping the therapeutic process.

In harm reduction–oriented therapy, progress is defined by increased safety, clarity, agency, and alignment with your values—not by a single metric or endpoint. Therapy becomes a place to explore and reflect, rather than to be judged or managed.
